Phone Tarot or an Email Tarot Reading? How to Choose
Written by Ren Levy, third-generation psychic.
Phone tarot is usually timed. An email tarot reading is written for your question. Here is how the two compare on cost, time, privacy and what you keep, so you can choose with your eyes open.
Late at night is when a lot of tarot questions arrive. The house is quiet, the message you were waiting for has not come, and you want to talk to someone now. That is a big part of why phone tarot exists. It is also why I think it is worth pausing for a minute before you dial, because a phone reading and an email reading are built quite differently, and the difference affects what you get for your money.
I only read by email, so I have a view. I will still try to lay out both fairly.
How phone tarot is usually priced
Phone readings are normally sold by time. Some services charge by the minute, others sell a fixed block such as a 15, 30 or 60 minute session. The reader shuffles, draws cards and talks you through them while you listen and respond.
Timed pricing has an obvious advantage: you can stop when you have heard enough. It also has a less obvious cost. The clock is running while you explain your situation, while the reader asks clarifying questions, and while you sit in silence trying to take in a difficult card. People often find that a good part of a 30 minute call goes on setting the scene. If the per-minute rate is high, it is easy to spend more than you meant to, particularly at 2am when you are upset and keep thinking one more question will settle it.
If you do book a timed reading, check the rate and the total before you start, and decide in advance when you will end the call.
How an email tarot reading works
An email reading is priced by the reading, not by the minute. You choose the reading, send your question and the context that matters, and receive a written reading by email within a stated window. Explaining your situation costs you nothing extra, because you do it in your own time before the reading begins. Nobody is waiting on the other end of a line while you find the right words.
My own readings work this way. You send your first name, your date of birth and the question in your own words. The reading responds to that and arrives in your inbox. You can see exactly what you will pay before checkout, and the price does not change however long your message is.
Time: now or soon
The real advantage of phone tarot is speed. If you need to hear a voice tonight, an email reading will not give you that. Mine arrive within 24 hours for a first reading and within 48 hours for the full readings, with a 1 hour Priority Delivery add-on if you need it faster. My piece on how long an email tarot reading takes goes into the detail.
It is worth asking whether "now" is really what you need, or just what the feeling is asking for. A question that feels urgent at midnight often looks different by morning. A short wait can mean you read the answer calmly instead of grabbing at it.
Privacy and pressure
Some people are comfortable talking about love, money or family out loud. Many are not, especially if they share a home or a wall with someone. An email reading lets you explain things without being overheard and without having to keep your voice steady. You can also leave out anything you would rather not share. First names are enough, and you never need to send screenshots of someone else's messages.
There is also less room for pressure. On a call, it is easy to agree to another ten minutes, or to a follow-up session, while you are emotional. With a written reading the decision to order is made before anything starts, and nothing is added after.
What you keep
When a phone reading ends, you keep your memory of it, plus whatever notes you managed to take. Memory is not kind to us when we are anxious. People often remember the one line that frightened them or the one line that gave them hope, and lose the rest.
A written reading stays the same. You can reread it, compare it with what actually happens, and notice the part you skipped the first time because it was not what you wanted to hear. For many people, that is the main reason to choose writing.
What neither format can do
Neither a call nor an email can guarantee another person's choices, confirm what someone is secretly thinking, or replace medical, legal, financial or mental health advice. If your question is about your safety, please go to the right support first. A good reader in either format will tell you the same.
Choosing for your question
Phone tarot may suit you if you want a live conversation, you can set a firm time limit and you are happy to work from memory. An email reading may suit you better if you want to explain properly without a meter running, if privacy matters, or if you want something to keep. You can read more about how I work on my email tarot reading page.
If you have one question on your mind and you are new here, the Intro Reading answers one specific question for US$12, by email within 24 hours, for first-time customers.
